Fantastic Creatures in the City, a family-friendly self-guided walking tour of downtown Boston, brings to life a world of fantastic animals hidden within the historic architectural ornament.

This unseen menagerie of carved stone creatures offers clues to Boston’s history. The project website provides a virtual tour and a guide for an outing in the city. The excursions will also introduce a large audience to the area's many unique stores and restaurants.

Starting over 300 yrs ago with the Old State House lion & unicorn, viewers are invited-creature by creature-to explore the City’s rich history. Descriptive stories about each location and animal, with references from literature and folklore, illuminate an engaging walk through Boston.

Our project provides online, self-guided offline activities that encourage safe outdoor family and small group scavenger hunt opportunities during the lockdown.
